What is Prosumer Economy?
The term prosumer coined first by Alvin Toffler has the roots with Ivan Illich, an Austrian philosopher, historian, and social critic. Prosumer is the mixture of two words, namely, producer and consumer. Illich is best known for his critiques of modern industrial society expanded on his ideas about the limitations of modern industrial society, and advocated for a shift towards more decentralized, community-based forms of production and consumption. Illich believed that modern technology had become too complex and specialized, limiting individual autonomy and creativity, and exacerbating social and environmental problems.
Combining Illich's ideas from "Tools for Conviviality" with Toffler's concept of the prosumer, we can see the prosumer as an individual who takes an active role in both the production and consumption of goods and services, enabled by new technologies and motivated by the desire for greater individual autonomy, creativity, and social and environmental sustainability.
The prosumer model challenges traditional power structures and institutions, enabling individuals to take control of their own production and consumption of goods and services, and to work collaboratively with others to build more sustainable and equitable systems. By using "convivial tools" - tools that are simple, accessible, and easy to use - prosumers can engage in more creative and satisfying forms of production and consumption, while minimizing the negative impacts on the environment and on society.
In this sense, the prosumer model represents a rejection of the dominant model of industrial society, and a call for a more decentralized, community-based approach to production and consumption. By combining the ideas of Toffler and Illich, the prosumer model can be seen as a path towards greater individual autonomy, creativity, and social and environmental sustainability, empowering individuals to take control of their own lives and work collaboratively towards a more just and sustainable future.
What is Convivial Society?
A convivial society can be summarized as a society that is oriented towards the well-being and autonomy of its members, rather than towards the growth and expansion of institutions and technologies. In a convivial society, individuals are able to engage in creative and fulfilling work, and to meet their needs through decentralized, community-based forms of production and consumption.
The prosumer economy is one way in which a convivial society can be realized. The prosumer model challenges traditional power structures and institutions, enabling individuals to take control of their own production and consumption of goods and services, and to work collaboratively with others to build more sustainable and equitable systems. By using simple, accessible tools and technologies, prosumers can engage in more creative and satisfying forms of production and consumption, while minimizing the negative impacts on the environment and on society.
In a convivial society, the prosumer model would be a central feature of the economy, enabling individuals to meet their needs while also fostering greater social and environmental sustainability. The convivial society and the prosumer economy are thus closely linked, both pointing towards a vision of social organization that is oriented towards human well-being and autonomy, rather than towards the expansion and domination of institutions and technologies.
